Sárospatak is 250 km East of Budapest, a town with an exceptional devotion to education and the arts. It is accessible by train from Budapest. The Institute is organized by Crescendo, an international Christian movement working together with many churches. In addition to courses and private lessons, students may participate in chapels and small discussion groups concerning challenges that artists face today as well as issues of a Christian worldview. Crescendo also offers personal mentoring. The course is open to all qualified young musicians regardless of their faith persuasion, and participation in the religious elements of the course is optional.

On the last four festive days of the Institute, during the “Crescendo Days”, a series of concerts are given by our faculty and the best students. Orchestra and chamber concerts, theater performance, lectures, exhibitions are open to the local public and guests visiting Sárospatak.

Participants will study the chorus as an instrument, focusing on building, perfecting, and tuning, focusing on the physical health of the body and choral singing technique. Understanding will be gained about the essence of working with a chorus, how much to expect from members, and what the choir should expect from the conductor. Colorstrings course: Pirkko Simojoki, viola (FIN)

The Colorstrings approach to music teaching was created by Csaba and Géza Szilvay in Finland. Its aim is to create a firm musical foundation for the child. It is essential, particularly in the early years that instrumental teaching is of the highest quality, as these formative first years are crucial for the child‘s future in music. At the very beginning of learning to play an instrument, the child will master the elements on which nearly all of the later musical and technical requirements are based. The children receive ”a musical parcel“ which encompasses technical skills, a trained ear for music, a deep understanding of music, as well as outstanding expressional skills. The Colourstrings Method is built on the philosophy of the scientist, music pedagogue and composer Zoltán Kodály. The course welcomes music teachers as well, who would like to learn more about the Colorstrings method! www.colourstrings.fi

The course will take place: August 9 – 16, 2010.
